“States General of Ecology” to rebuild the Greens

Five months to build a new party, four years to grow from 12,000 members to one million supporters: elected national secretary of Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV) by an electorate of some 5,000 activists on December 10, 2022, Marine Tondelier has set herself ambitious goals. From a Parisian barge, she launched the “states general of ecology”, Thursday, February 9, by displaying her wishes for enlargement.

By summer, in 150 days, Marine Tondelier has assured it: “We are going to change. » By applying, she said, “the recipe for the victory of the municipal elections of 2020 [riches en listes d’union écologistes et citoyennes]to surpass ourselves and build with”. A transformation of the party in two stages: first a time of consultation, online and through meetings; then a construction period, during which randomly selected participants will be responsible for answering the major questions that have emerged. All culminating in a major refoundation convention in June. The calendar is fixed, the questions open, assures Marine Tondelier. The EELV mayor of Poitiers, Léonore Moncond’huy, will oversee the process, in conjunction with a service provider, the Open Democracy association, a player in the citizens’ convention for the climate.
Assumed representative of a certain continuity, Noël Mamère was responsible, Thursday, for introducing these states general. “Ecology is an idea that comes from afar”, declared the former presidential candidate, who has known others, refoundations, such as the EELV cooperative, which, in 2011, had tried to push back the walls of the party, by bringing in activists. Without ever succeeding in transforming the Greens into a mass party… So how to succeed in this conversion, which has never been achieved yet? The novelty is perhaps due to the fact that, for the new management, the party tool is no longer essential. When Marine Tondelier aims for a million supporters, it is also an open door to a more flexible political organization, which must become a “environmental movement”.
” Change of scenery “
MEP David Cormand wonders, while excluding the “gaseous” format chosen by La France insoumise: “Do we dissolve EELV and do something else? Do we keep a party, supplementing it with a larger structure? » Everything is open, once again, but everyone agrees on the limits of the partisan framework for aggregating and representing this new “ecological class”, theorized by the philosopher Bruno Latour – a new social class that rejects productivism and wants to take responsibility for living conditions.
