Russian driver Nikita Mazepin can race in Europe again

The President of the General Court of the European Union suspended Wednesday, through an order, the sanctions against the Russian pilot Nikita Mazepin, because of the war in Ukraine. The latter therefore authorizes him to participate in any automobile competition within the European Union, including Formula 1.

“I am very happy with this decision, which gives me hope to resume my professional career in international motor racing”reacted Mazepin to AFP. “I will do everything possible to make up for lost time and look forward to join the sport that I love, to which I have dedicated my life”he added.

He will have to run under a neutral flag

After Russia invaded Ukraine, Nikita Mazepin had was ousted from his Formula 1 team, Haas. At the beginning of March 2022, he had been, like his father (oligarch owner and CEO of the chemical manufacturer Uralchem) included on the list of Russian personalities sanctioned by the European Union.

She considered Nikita Mazepin to be “linked to an influential businessman (his father) with an activity in economic sectors which constitute a substantial source of income” for Russia.

If he manages to land a contract with any motorsport team, Nikita Mazepin “must undertake to race under a neutral flag and sign the drivers’ commitment required by the International Automobile Federation for this purpose”as provided for in the ordinance.
