Qatar accused of spying on senior magistrate

The Swiss newspaper NZZ am Sonntag reveals this Sunday that the country would have orchestrated a spy operation against the former attorney general Michael Lauber, responsible for investigating the awarding of the 2022 World Cup.

The weekly claims that the facts occurred on June 16, 2017, during an informal meeting between the prosecutor and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. With the help of former CIA agents, microphones were hidden in the meeting room.

Qatar denies the charges

Qatar has denied these accusations, while Mr. Lauber’s lawyer said his client did not know he was being spied on, and had not been blackmailed after the meeting.

The newspaper also explains that sources with knowledge of the file described the operation to him, on condition of anonymity, specifying that it bore the code name “Mont Cervin Project”, from the name of the famous mountain located in the Alps, at the Italian-Swiss border.
