Kaden Groves wins in the sprint the 5th stage of the Giro marked by two falls of Evenepoel
The mive sprint announced for the fifth stage of the Giro was respected this Wednesday but the day was punctuated by numerous falls as Remco Evenepoel (twice) and Primoz Roglic found themselves on the ground. If we stick to the result of the day, Kaden Groves won at the end of the 171 km between Altripalda and Salerno.
After having slipped perfectly behind the train of the DSM, the Australian from Alpecin-Deceuninck resisted in the last meters to Jonathan Milan (Bahrain-Victorious) who won on Sunday.
It is his first victory in the race after two third places. The sprint was marked in the last meters by the high speed fall of Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) who finished fifth but crossing the line on the ground.
Roglic and Evenepoel fell in the final
This is ultimately the story of this fifth stage contested in the rain and on wet roads: a long succession of more or less serious crashes. Starting at the front of the race in the first kilometers of the race to consolidate his leader’s jersey, Thibaut Pinot narrowly avoided finding himself on the ground when Martin Marcellusi and Stefano Gandin had fallen in front of him.
In the last seven kilometers, the two big favorites of the race fell again: first Primoz Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) 7 km from the line then Remco Evenepoel in the last three kilometers. This had no consequences for the general clification since Andreas Leknessund (DSM) kept the pink jersey, Roglic and Evenepoel being finally credited with the same time as the first peloton. These falls could nevertheless have physical consequences for the runners in the coming days.
