Joan Laporta “didn’t clarify anything” according to Javier Tebas
Javier Tebas is not convinced by the exit of Joan Laporta. The president of the Spanish League said on Wednesday that Joan Laporta, had no “nothing clarified” on payments to the former number 2 of the Iberian arbitration, José María Enriquez Negreira, between 2001 and 2018. “Most clubs said they didn’t understand” the explanations provided by the boss of Barça to justify the payment of 7.3 M€ to this former referee, explained Tebas on the sidelines of a press conference organized after an extraordinary meeting of La Liga clubs to listen Laporta’s explanations.
“He was content to summarize what we could hear (on his part) at a press conference, lamented the La Liga president. He defended that he never sought to buy referees or influence them. Most of the clubs said that this was not normal, that these payments were not correct and that they should investigate. »
Then Tebas gave his take on the case: “Je don’t think Barcelona bought referees. What we think is that these payments could be used to influence something. These explanations are not enough, it is incomprehensible to pay the vice-president of the CTA (Spanish arbitration) for so many years. » Negreira is under investigation in the case, along with the Blaugrana club and several of its former managers, including ex-presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu.
